Agreement on Zeremis® green steel struck between Tata Steel and Lindab

Today, Lindab and Tata Steel Nederland announce to have entered a memorandum of understanding to supply Zeremis® green steel once the IJmuiden steelworks transitions to hydrogen-based steel production.

Lindab is a leading supplier of ventilation systems, with approximately 80-95 percent of Lindab's products' environmental impact and around 50 percent of Lindab's total emissions coming from steel. Steel is however a material with many advantages such as a long lifespan, great recyclability, the ability not to catch fire, to name a few. Therefore, Lindab wants to be part of the sustainable transition within the steel industry.

The agreement demonstrates Lindab's dedication to purchasing the green steel that Tata Steel intends to manufacture using the hydrogen route, which is more environmentally friendly and cleaner than the current steelmaking process.

"Lindab aims to create a better climate, in part by contributing to a better indoor climate with our products, and in part by contributing to a better global climate by working in a sustainable way. For us to be successful in this mission we need to work with the right partners to minimise the impact in our supply chain. By signing this memorandum of understanding, Tata Steel can be that kind of partner.”
says Matilda Isaksson, Group Sustainability Manager at Lindab.

Direct Reduced Iron hydrogen-based steel manufacturing in the Netherlands necessitates major investments and a different steel manufacturing process, which is scheduled for 2030.

We have a decades long lasting relationship with Lindab, and they have always been on the forefront of developments in the market. In our business, Lindab is a front-runner on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) developments and very pro-active and vocal about this. We are delighted to sign this memorandum of understanding with Lindab”, says Stefan Landesz, Director Commercial Business Unit Colors at Tata Steel Nederland.
